- Description:
- CARTLIB is a library of the boundary locations of census divisions and census tracts in a format usable by computer mapping programmes. The locations of the boundaries are approximate only, because they are intended solely for graphic display and the shapes have been generalized into polygons of from 3 to 98 sides. Each boundary is defined by the X-Y co-ordinates of each vertex in a clockwise sequence, with the first vertex (the most northern one usually) being repeated at the end. The co-ordinates of the vertices of the census divisions are determined by an arbitrary rectangular grid. Southern Ontario and Quebec are part of an inset of the main map of Canada, at a larger scale. The co-ordinates of the census tract polygons conform to the Universal Transverse Mercator Grid (6 degree zones) as printed on the National Topographical Series of maps. It should be noted, however, that because Calgary and Saint John, N.B. CMAs are located in two UTM zones, the co-ordinates have been converted to the grid of one zone. It is recommended that users first use the base maps at the following scales to get an idea of the best scale for their requirements: .006 for census divisions and .0016 for census tracts (this is the ratio of units on the output map to units in the file). <hr /> <h3>Note:</h3> <p><strong>13 April 2018</strong></p> <p>Esri shapefiles for Census Tracts were created from the original Esri .e00 interchange format using <code style="font-family: "Source Code Pro";">avcimport</code> from the <a href="AVCE00">http://avce00.maptools.org/avce00/</a> library.</p> <p>The coverages were then transformed into shapefiles using <code style="font-family: "Source Code Pro";">ogr2ogr</code> from <a href="GDAL">http://www.gdal.org/</a>:</p> <p><code style="font-family: "Source Code Pro";">ogr2ogr -f "Esri Shapefile" {output shapefile directory} {avcimport coverage}</code></p> <p>Note that this produces a number of shapefiles per coverage file/census tract. Files produced are of the following tiype</p> <table> <thead> <tr> <th>Suffix</th> <th>Type</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>ARC</td> <td>Line file</td> </tr> <tr> <td>CNT</td> <td>Point file – polygon centroids</td> </tr> <tr> <td>LAB</td> <td>Point file – labels</td> </tr> <tr> <td>PAL</td> <td>Poygon file – areas</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p><strong>Accurate projection and geographic accuracy of automatically generated shapefiles is not guaranteed. If positional accuracy is suspect, reproject the shapefiles according to the documentation or work with the orginal .E00 files.</strong></p>
